GSM & GPRS Design

In applications where embedded GSM or GPRS technology is required it helps to have an understanding of the RF implications and requirements. However even in cases as simple as automated SMS based services the machine to machine market place is complicated, fragmented and currently poorly supported by most Network Service Providers.

Embedded GPRS systems are available as complete "modules" that have the SIM card and necessary support such that they only need power and an antenna, these are useful where budget is limited, or as a substitute for a conventional serial modem. Modules are also available where the SIM card and antenna need to be interfaced to through your application PCB - this is often where problems can arise.

Beyond the actual embedded electronics, there is often a significant amount of systems integration and design that is required at the remote end. This involves network interfacing, understanding of IP addressing and allocation as well as structured database technologies and interfaces.

At Trimerix we have implemented a number of embedded GSM/GPRS projects - enabling us to contribute from the start.

Some typical applications and areas where GPRS is used are:

• Tracking systems - Streaming or passing GPS co-ordinates to a server
• Remote data transfer   software updates
• General information transfer where wired communications are not practical
